Oprah & Dr. Northrop Get Slammed on Thyroid Advice

Oprah_and_dr_northrop Self-appointed thyroid patient advocate, Mary Shomon, took exception to the idea that emotional issues could be a significant factor contributing to a thyroid problem. She attacked Oprah and Dr. Northrup in an open letter to Oprah’s viewers. Ms. Shomon said of Dr. Northrup, “It is irresponsible of her to suggest that an inability to express yourself is somehow responsible for a woman's thyroid condition.” Going on she states “Ultimately, in claiming to advocate for women's health, Dr. Northrup and Oprah both have inexplicably embraced an extreme - and, frankly, quite unsympathetic - view that blames women's lifestyle and emotional life for our health problems, hormonal imbalances, and symptoms.

Mary doesn't care if Oprah herself has embraced Dr. Northrup's theory. She believes no woman should believe that she is to blame, much less that blowing kisses to herself in the mirror, and taking a hot bath before bed to resolve her hormonal imbalances, as Dr. Northrup suggested on the show.

Real Cougars Leaving Boomer Men: Will This Spark a New Trend?

Middle_aged_man  The Real Cougar woman is a fascinating character study. She is changing the social landscape of this country.  She is revolutionizing, how woman over 40 see themselves. She is sexy, smart, independent and not afraid to take risks.  I find it fascinating to dig deep to see what motivates her, what scares her and how she handles the joy and the pain that accompany her evolution.

The Real Cougar is ready to shake things up. She isn't afraid to walk away from what is no longer working. But, how's that affecting her male counterpart?  What's happening to the boomer man?  Is the former "King of the Jungle" limping along dragging his tail between his legs? And, the big question is, will this sleeping lion, wake up and start fighting for what he wants?  I think he will find his roar and that's what will ignite the next big trend in this country.

Real Cougars Are Changing Society Says Microtrends, Mark J. Penn

Cougar_couple_4 Trend spotting is what Mark J. Penn does best.  In fact, he does it so well he has advised super stars like Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and Tony Blair. In his best selling new book Microtrends the pollster explores 75 new trends emerging in human behavior. These are changes that rock the world. One of the newest trends Penn talks about in his book in the emergence of the Real Cougar.

He sees that this microtrend is not only obvious for Hollywood stars like 51-year-old Geena Davis married to a 35-year-old; 61-year-old Susan Sarandon living with 48-year-old Tim Robbins; or nearly 50-year-old Madonna sharing her life with husband Guy Richie who is only 39.  It's taking hold all over the country. Real Cougars are everywhere.

Bioidentical Hormones Protected From Big Pharma

50ish_couple An August 30, 2007 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Junell is a big victory for patients and physicians who have won the battle against Big Pharma. They will continue to have access to vital compounded and customized medicines, including bio-identical hormone therapy. Advocates, patients, doctors, the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP), Patients and Professionals for Customized Care (P2C2) and other pharmacy associations stood up to this legislation, and they won.

I want to thank everyone who fought so hard to maintain our rights. Not being able to choose the medicines that work best for us would be a terrible loss.

Sex On The First Date - You Betcha!

Another_fiftish_couple_2 Sex on a first date is twice as likely for singles over 50 than for their under-40 counterparts, according to a survey published by Wanobe.com (http://www.wanobe.com), a UK lifestyle site for baby boomers aged over 50.

A poll of more than 1,000 men and women between the ages of 50 and 65 by Europe’s largest online dating service, PARSHIP, and Wanobe.com, found that 37% of singles over 50 would have sex on a first date compared to 18% of under-40s. Guess we have no time to waste!

However, 76% of the women polled were old-fashioned – they expected that the man would have to buy them dinner first.   I suppose they need their strength for what's to come.

HPV Test Vs. The Pap Smear - What's Better?

Boomer_women I know when it's time to go for my annual medical exam, its' confusing to figure out which tests are best for detecting a potential problem. These days there seems to be a laundry list of choices, and we're left to figure out which one is best. For early detection of cervical cancer it has always been the Pap smear, but maybe that's about to change.

Now researchers at McGill University in Montreal have released some new information.  Their studies are showing that the HPV screening test is superior to the traditional Pap test in detecting cervical cancer. Accuracy for the HPV test was 94.6%, compared to 55.4% for the Pap.  This was reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, October 18th issue.

Real Women - Real Pain - It's Not Our Imagination

Women_with_headache If you think the pain you're experiencing from your migraine or your arthritis is worse for you than for the men in your life, you are probably right. Women generally experience more recurrent pain, more severe pain and longer lasting pain than men. So it's not your imagination, it's just another perk that comes with being a woman - how lucky are we?

Research is showing that women appear to experience pain differently than men, but they aren't sure why.  Ready for this?  Here's the conclusion they are coming up with. The difference has to do with numerous biological reasons including those that are genetic and hormonal.  Wow!!  You have to laugh - that's really revolutionary thinking.  Must have taken years and years to come to that conclusion.  Women really are different from men, both on the outside and the inside.

Real Cougar Women - Too Threatening For Men?

Steve Santagati author of "The Manual" had this to say about the revolution of women in his Huntington Post Blog dated October 13th.  I think you will agree, if that's the way Steve is feeling (and I'll bet his opinion is shared by lots of men) we must be doing something right. If a real women one who is independent, sexy, confident and financially independent is too much for our male counterparts, well they are just going to have to grow up and learn to be real men. Read on and decide for yourself.

Happy_women You can't deny Charles Darwin; creatures will, in fact, evolve and mutate given enough time and the right environment. And we, regardless of hairspray and cell phones, are still only creatures, after all, and our changes have become startling. Global warming pales in comparison to what's happening to us male and female homo sapiens. It's scary. If we keep evolving-- in the direction which we are currently moving-- I wouldn't doubt it if women soon see a little penis growing? Penises are ugly. Women are pretty. No one wants that!
